Specialist care for hormones and metabolism — from diabetes and thyroid disorders to weight, bone health, PCOS and growth concerns — with qualified endocrinologists and on-site laboratory support.
The Endocrinology department at Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar evaluates and manages conditions of the hormone-producing glands and of the body's metabolism, including the pancreas, thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, bones and parathyroid glands. Hormones act as chemical messengers that influence energy, weight, mood, growth, sleep, fertility and blood sugar, so when they are out of balance the effects can be wide-ranging and easy to mistake for something else.
Our endocrinologists begin with a detailed history and examination, and then use carefully chosen blood tests to find the cause of your symptoms. Many endocrine conditions, such as diabetes and thyroid disease, are long-term and are controlled best through a steady partnership — the right medicines, regular monitoring, and diet and lifestyle changes you can realistically follow.
Endocrine health is closely connected to the rest of the body — diabetes affects the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves, and thyroid and hormone problems can affect fertility, bones and mood. Being part of a multispeciality clinic means these links are assessed together, and referrals are coordinated smoothly when another specialist is needed.

Often, yes. Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range, and it is the best time to act. Losing even a modest amount of weight, eating fewer refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks, exercising regularly and sleeping well can bring blood sugar back to normal or delay diabetes considerably. Regular testing is important, because it can progress without symptoms.
For most people with an underactive thyroid, treatment is long-term, because the gland does not recover, though the dose is adjusted from time to time based on blood tests. Thyroid tablets work best when taken in the morning on an empty stomach, with water, about 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, and separated by a few hours from calcium or iron supplements. Never stop or change the dose without advice.
It depends on the type of diabetes, your treatment and how well controlled your sugar is. HbA1c, which reflects average blood sugar over about three months, is generally checked every three months when treatment is being adjusted or control is poor, and about every six months when control is stable. Home glucose checks may be needed more often, especially if you use insulin, and your endocrinologist will advise a schedule that fits you.
It could be. PCOS commonly causes irregular or infrequent periods, excess facial or body hair, acne and weight gain, and it is linked to insulin resistance. However, thyroid problems and raised prolactin can cause similar symptoms, so an examination with blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound is needed to find the cause. Treatment is tailored to your goals, whether that is regular cycles, managing weight or planning a pregnancy.
Sometimes. An underactive thyroid, diabetes, vitamin D or B12 deficiency and low cortisol can all cause persistent tiredness, but so can anaemia, poor sleep, stress, depression and many other common conditions. A consultation with a few basic blood tests usually clarifies whether a hormonal or metabolic cause is present, so that you are treated for the actual reason rather than guessing.
Do not wait for an appointment if a person with diabetes is confused, drowsy, unconscious or has a seizure, or has very high blood sugar with repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, fast deep breathing or fruity-smelling breath. If someone with low blood sugar is awake and able to swallow, give fast-acting sugar such as glucose or juice while help is on the way. Also seek urgent care for high fever with a very fast heartbeat and agitation in someone with a thyroid condition, or for severe weakness, vomiting and collapse in someone on long-term steroids. Call the emergency number 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away.
