Gastroenterology Care at Apollo Clinic, Shyamnagar

Expert care for the digestive system and liver — from acidity, bloating and constipation to fatty liver, gallstones and inflammatory bowel disease — with qualified gastroenterologists and on-site laboratory support.

Overview

The Gastroenterology department at Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar evaluates and manages conditions of the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Digestive symptoms such as acidity, bloating, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habit or unexplained weight loss are among the most common reasons people seek medical advice — and they can have very different causes, from simple diet and lifestyle factors to conditions that need closer investigation.

Our gastroenterologists begin with a careful history and examination, paying attention to the pattern of your symptoms, your diet, medicines and family history. Investigations are chosen to fit what is found, so you are not put through unnecessary tests, and where treatment is needed it is explained clearly, including what to eat, what to avoid and what to watch for.

Digestive and liver health are closely linked to overall health — diabetes, obesity, thyroid problems, stress and certain medicines can all affect the gut and liver. Being part of a multispeciality clinic means these connections are looked at together rather than in isolation.

Why Choose Apollo Clinic, Shyamnagar

Tests Under One Roof

Blood and stool tests are available through our Laboratory department and imaging through Radiology, so investigations and a treatment plan can often be started in one visit.

Diagnosis Before Treatment

We look for the cause of your symptoms rather than only masking them, so you understand what is happening and why the recommended treatment fits.

Practical Diet & Lifestyle Advice

Many digestive and liver conditions improve significantly with the right changes in food, weight and habits, and you will leave with guidance that fits your daily routine.

Multispeciality Referral

Direct coordination with general medicine and endocrinology within the clinic, since diabetes, obesity and thyroid conditions often affect the gut and liver, with onward referral into the Apollo network for endoscopy, colonoscopy and advanced procedures.

How to Book a Consultation

  1. Book an appointment or walk in. Gastroenterology consultations run during OPD hours; booking in advance helps ensure an unhurried slot, and you can call ahead if your symptoms need prompt attention.
  2. Bring previous reports. Carry any earlier blood tests, ultrasound or endoscopy reports and prescriptions, along with a list of all the medicines and supplements you take.
  3. Note your symptoms and eating pattern. When symptoms occur, what triggers or relieves them, and any changes in weight, appetite or stool help the doctor greatly. Ask the clinic whether any tests need you to come fasting.
  4. Examination and diagnosis. The gastroenterologist will take a history, examine your abdomen and advise which blood, stool or imaging tests, if any, are needed.
  5. Treatment plan and follow-up. You will be given a clear plan — medication, diet and lifestyle changes, or referral for endoscopy or another procedure where needed — with a review appointment to check how you are responding.

Frequently Asked Questions

I get acidity almost every day. When should I see a doctor?

Occasional acidity is common, but heartburn that occurs more than a couple of times a week, keeps returning after antacids, or wakes you at night deserves a proper evaluation. See a doctor sooner if you also have difficulty or pain when swallowing, unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, black stools or anaemia, as these are warning signs that need investigation rather than self-treatment.

My ultrasound says fatty liver. Is it serious?

Fatty liver is very common, especially with excess weight, diabetes, high cholesterol or regular alcohol use. In its early stages it often causes no symptoms and can improve considerably with weight loss, regular exercise, a healthier diet and controlling blood sugar and cholesterol. However, if left unaddressed it can progress in some people, so blood tests and a doctor's assessment are worthwhile to see how much the liver is affected.

I have bloating and irregular stools. Is this IBS or something more serious?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common cause of long-standing bloating, cramps and alternating constipation and diarrhoea, and it is diagnosed after other conditions have been reasonably ruled out. Symptoms such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, symptoms that wake you from sleep, anaemia or a new onset of symptoms after the age of 45 to 50 should not be assumed to be IBS and need investigation.

Will I need an endoscopy or colonoscopy?

Not everyone does. Many digestive problems can be diagnosed and treated after a consultation and basic tests. An endoscopy or colonoscopy is advised when symptoms suggest something that needs to be looked at directly, when warning signs are present, or for screening in certain age groups or risk categories. Your gastroenterologist will explain why it is recommended, how it is done and what preparation is involved.

When should I start screening for colon cancer?

Screening is generally recommended to begin in the mid-40s to 50, depending on the guideline followed, and earlier for people with a family history of colon cancer or polyps, long-standing inflammatory bowel disease, or certain genetic conditions. Your doctor can advise the right age and method for you based on your personal and family history.

When to seek emergency care

Do not wait for an appointment if you are vomiting blood or passing black, tarry or bloody stools, have sudden severe abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting with inability to pass stool or gas, yellow eyes with confusion or drowsiness, or signs of severe dehydration. Call the emergency number 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away.
