Your first point of contact for everyday health — from fevers and infections to diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid care, preventive health check-ups and long-term follow-up — with experienced physicians and on-site diagnostics.
The General Medicine department at Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar looks after adults with a wide range of health concerns — sudden illnesses such as fever, infections and stomach upsets, long-term conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, body aches or weight changes that do not have an obvious cause. It is often the best place to start when you are not sure which specialist to see.
Our physicians take a full history, examine you carefully and recommend tests only where they will change the treatment. The aim is to find the real cause of your symptoms, treat what can be treated, and explain clearly what is happening, what to expect and when to come back.
Good health is also about prevention. Regular check-ups can pick up rising blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol long before they cause problems, and small changes at that stage go a long way. Because General Medicine sits within a multispeciality clinic, you can be referred smoothly to a specialist whenever a concern needs one, without having to start over.
Consultations are supported by relevant investigations available through our Laboratory and Radiology departments:
| Service | What It Is Used For |
|---|---|
| General Medicine Consultation | Clinical evaluation of fever, cough and cold, stomach upset, body aches, headaches, tiredness, dizziness and other everyday health concerns |
| Diabetes, Blood Pressure & Thyroid Care | Diagnosis, treatment and regular monitoring of diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders and high cholesterol, with medication reviews and lifestyle guidance |
| Blood & Urine Tests | Blood sugar and HbA1c, complete blood count, lipid profile, liver and kidney function, thyroid profile, vitamin levels, urine tests and infection markers, available through our Laboratory department, used to diagnose illness and track long-term conditions |
| Chest & Bone X-rays | X-rays through our Radiology department, used to look for chest infections, fractures and other problems when a clinical examination suggests they are needed |
| Preventive Health Check-ups | Screening for diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, anaemia and other common conditions, with a personalised plan based on your age, family history and lifestyle |
| Vaccination Guidance for Adults | Advice on vaccines such as influenza, pneumococcal, hepatitis B and tetanus, and on travel-related vaccination, based on your age and health conditions |
| Specialist Referral & Coordination | Smooth referral to the right specialist when a concern needs one, with results and treatment brought back together and follow-up continued with your physician |

One Trusted Point of ContactA physician who knows your history looks at the whole picture, so you are not left going from one doctor to another to work out where to begin. | Tests Under One RoofBlood and urine tests through our Laboratory and X-rays through Radiology are available in the same building, so diagnosis and a treatment plan can often be started in one visit. | |
Focus on PreventionRegular check-ups and clear lifestyle guidance help catch diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol problems early, when they are easiest to manage. | Multispeciality ReferralWhen a concern needs a specialist, your physician coordinates a referral to the relevant department within the clinic, with onward referral into the Apollo network for advanced tests, procedures or inpatient care. | |
If you are unsure what is wrong, or have several symptoms, a general physician is usually the best first step. They can assess the whole picture, arrange initial tests and refer you to the right specialist if needed. If you already know the problem falls under one speciality, such as a bone injury or a skin condition, going directly to that specialist is perfectly reasonable.
Most fevers are caused by viral infections and settle within a few days with rest and fluids. However, a fever lasting more than two to three days, or one that comes with severe headache, rash, persistent vomiting, breathlessness, confusion, or pain in the abdomen or while passing urine, should be checked, because infections such as dengue, typhoid and malaria are common causes and are treated differently.
Yes, particularly as you get older or if you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure. These conditions often cause no symptoms in the early stages, and finding them early makes them easier to manage. How often to be checked depends on your age, weight, family history and lifestyle, and your physician can suggest a schedule that suits you.
High blood pressure is often called a silent condition because it usually causes no symptoms while it quietly strains the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and brain. A single high reading does not always mean you have the condition, so your doctor will confirm it with repeated readings. If it is confirmed, lifestyle changes and, where needed, regular medication greatly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
It is best not to. Most coughs, colds and sore throats are viral and do not improve with antibiotics, and taking them unnecessarily can cause side effects and make future infections harder to treat. Painkillers can also affect the stomach, kidneys and blood pressure when used regularly or in the wrong dose, so it is safest to take medicines only as advised by a doctor.
Do not wait for an appointment if you have chest pain or pressure, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, a drooping face or slurred speech, severe breathlessness, fainting, a high fever with stiff neck or confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, or extreme drowsiness or confusion with very high or very low blood sugar. Call the emergency number 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away.
