Diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles — with in-house nerve and muscle testing, qualified neurologists, and a structured approach to long-term neurological care.
The Neurology department at Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar evaluates and manages disorders of the nervous system — the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Symptoms such as headache, numbness, tingling, weakness, seizures, tremor or memory change can arise from many different causes, and getting to the right one usually depends on a careful clinical examination backed by the right test.
Our neurologists take a detailed history and perform a neurological examination before recommending any investigation. Where a nerve, muscle or brain-electrical-activity study is needed, it is done on-site, so the diagnosis and the treatment plan that follows it can move faster.
Neurological symptoms frequently overlap with other systems — diabetes and vascular disease affecting nerves, orthopaedic conditions mimicking nerve compression, or thyroid and metabolic causes of tremor and fatigue. Being part of a multispeciality clinic means these connections are not missed.
Nerve, muscle and brain-electrical studies are available on-site under neurologist supervision:
| Test | What It Is Used For |
|---|---|
| EEG (Electroencephalogram) | Records the brain's electrical activity through scalp electrodes; used to evaluate seizures, suspected epilepsy, blackouts and certain sleep disturbances |
| EMG (Electromyography) | Measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction; used to evaluate muscle weakness, cramps and suspected nerve or muscle disease |
| NCS (Nerve Conduction Study) | Tests how well and how fast peripheral nerves carry electrical signals; used to evaluate numbness, tingling and suspected nerve compression or damage |
| NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity) | Measures the speed of nerve signal transmission, commonly performed alongside NCS; helps pinpoint the site and severity of nerve involvement, including in diabetic neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome |
The list below covers what we see most often. If your concern is not listed, it does not mean we cannot help — please call the clinic or book a consultation and our neurologist will advise.

On-Site Nerve & Muscle TestingEEG, EMG, NCS and NCV performed in the same building, so nerve and brain-related symptoms can be investigated without referral to an outside centre. | Diagnosis Before TreatmentWe examine and investigate before prescribing, so you understand what is causing the symptom and why the recommended treatment fits it. | |
Multispeciality ReferralDirect access to general medicine, orthopaedics and endocrinology within the clinic, with onward referral into the Apollo network for imaging or specialised procedures. | Structured Follow-UpMany neurological conditions are long-term. Review appointments are built into the plan so treatment is adjusted based on response, not simply repeated. | |
No. Electrodes are placed on the scalp using a mild adhesive gel; the test only records electrical activity and does not pass any current into the brain. It is completely painless and typically takes thirty minutes to an hour, depending on the type of study advised.
They are closely related and usually done together. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) checks how well a nerve is transmitting a signal, while Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) specifically measures how fast that signal travels. Together they help locate where along a nerve a problem exists and how severe it is.
EMG involves inserting a thin needle electrode into selected muscles to record their electrical activity, which can cause brief, mild discomfort at each insertion point. There is no lasting pain afterward for most patients, and the information it gives is often essential for diagnosing muscle and nerve conditions accurately.
See a neurologist if headaches are frequent, worsening, disrupt daily life, or come with warning signs such as vision changes, weakness, slurred speech, or a headache unlike any you've had before. Occasional mild headaches usually do not need a specialist, but a pattern change is always worth evaluating.
It depends on the cause, which is why nerve conduction testing is often the first step. Common causes such as diabetic neuropathy or carpal tunnel syndrome respond well to treatment once identified, particularly when addressed early, while long-standing nerve damage may only partially improve.
