Expert care for the lungs and breathing — from persistent cough, asthma and COPD to chest infections, tuberculosis and sleep-related breathing problems — with qualified chest physicians and on-site diagnostic support.
The Chest Medicine and Pulmonology department at Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar evaluates and manages conditions of the lungs, airways and chest. Breathing difficulty, a cough that will not go away, wheezing or chest tightness can arise from many different causes — an infection, an allergy, long-term airway disease, smoking-related damage, or problems that begin outside the lungs — and the right treatment depends on finding the true cause.
Our chest physicians begin with a detailed history, including your symptoms, work and living environment, smoking history and family history, followed by a careful examination of the chest. Tests such as a chest X-ray, breathing tests and blood or sputum tests are then chosen to fit what is found, so you are investigated thoroughly without unnecessary procedures.
Many chest conditions, such as asthma and COPD, are long-term and are controlled best when the treatment is understood and followed well. Our team spends time on inhaler technique, triggers and action plans, so that you can manage your breathing confidently day to day, and it works together with other specialities when the heart, allergies, weight or sleep are also involved.
Consultations are supported by relevant investigations available through our Radiology and Laboratory departments:
| Service | What It Is Used For |
|---|---|
| Chest Medicine Consultation | Clinical evaluation of cough, breathlessness, wheeze, chest tightness, chest pain, coughing up blood, snoring and other breathing concerns |
| Chest X-ray | Detects pneumonia, tuberculosis, fluid around the lungs, collapsed lung, masses and other changes in the lungs, available through our Radiology department |
| Lung Function Testing (Spirometry) | A simple breathing test that measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast, used to diagnose and monitor asthma, COPD and other lung conditions |
| Blood & Sputum Tests | Complete blood count, inflammatory markers, allergy-related tests, sputum examination and tests for tuberculosis, available through our Laboratory department, used to find the cause of infection, inflammation or allergy |
| Inhaler & Nebuliser Guidance | Hands-on teaching of correct inhaler technique, trigger avoidance and a written action plan, so asthma and COPD treatment works as well as it should |
| Tuberculosis Care & Follow-up | Diagnosis, treatment planning and regular monitoring for tuberculosis and other long-term chest infections, with support to complete the full course of treatment |
| Smoking Cessation Support | Counselling and medical support to quit smoking or tobacco use, and to protect your lungs from further damage |
| CT Scan, Bronchoscopy & Sleep Study Referral | Where more detailed imaging, a direct look into the airways or an overnight sleep study is needed, it is arranged through the Apollo network, with results reviewed and follow-up continued at the clinic |

Chest X-Ray and Lab Tests Under One RoofChest X-rays are available through our Radiology department and blood and sputum tests through our Laboratory, so a cause can often be identified and treatment started in one visit. | Diagnosis Before TreatmentWe look for the cause of your cough or breathlessness before prescribing, so you understand what is happening and why the recommended treatment fits. | |
Long-Term Breathing SupportFor asthma, COPD and other long-term conditions, we focus on inhaler technique, trigger avoidance and regular reviews, so your symptoms stay under control and flare-ups are caught early. | Multispeciality ReferralDirect coordination with general medicine, paediatrics and cardiology within the clinic, since heart, weight and allergy problems often overlap with breathing difficulties, with onward referral into the Apollo network for CT scans, bronchoscopy, sleep studies and inpatient care. | |
Yes. A cough that lasts longer than three weeks is considered persistent and should be evaluated, because it can be caused by conditions such as asthma, acid reflux, allergy, post-infection airway irritation or tuberculosis. It is especially important to see a doctor if the cough comes with fever, night sweats, weight loss, blood in the sputum or breathlessness.
Inhalers are a safe and effective way to treat asthma and COPD because the medicine goes straight to the lungs, so much smaller doses are needed than with tablets. They are not addictive. Using them regularly as advised keeps the airways calm and prevents attacks, and using them properly matters as much as using them at all, which is why we check your technique at the clinic.
Yes. Tuberculosis is curable in the large majority of cases with the right combination of medicines taken regularly for the full duration prescribed, which is usually several months. Stopping early because you feel better is the most common reason treatment fails and is what allows resistant infection to develop, so it is important to complete the course and attend follow-up visits.
It can be either, and sometimes it is neither — anaemia, excess weight, poor fitness, anxiety and other conditions can also cause it. Because the lungs and heart are closely linked, the cause is worked out from your history, examination and tests such as a chest X-ray, breathing test, blood tests and, where needed, a heart evaluation. It is worth having checked rather than assuming it is only lack of fitness.
It might be. Sleep apnoea causes the airway to repeatedly narrow or close during sleep, leading to loud snoring, pauses in breathing, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. It is more common with excess weight and can affect blood pressure and heart health if untreated. A consultation will assess your risk, and if needed a sleep study will be arranged to confirm the diagnosis.
Do not wait for an appointment if you have severe breathlessness or cannot speak in full sentences, bluish lips or face, chest pain with breathlessness, coughing up a large amount of blood, or an asthma or COPD attack that does not improve after using your reliever inhaler. Call the emergency number 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away.
